Refinu is a leadership development and behavioral science tool that was founded by academics from UC Berkeley, UCLA, Northwestern and London Business School. These professors were looking to build a more effective assessment device that was topical in that it utilized the most recent academic studies and applicable, in that it could be effectively leveraged by people in industry. By teaming up with consultants and specialists in technology and machine learning, they were able to create a full service personality and leadership development platform that helps users and companies recognize their strengths, isolate their weaknesses and maximize their output potential with interpersonal tools founded on scientifically proven academic research.
Our Mission
Our mission is to develop future leaders through behavioral science. We draw on personality, leadership development and behavioral science to offer bespoke development tools, personality profiling and corporate consulting.
Our Research
We are all about replicable, peer-reviewed science. Our academic team conducts research on leadership and personality development at leading universities throughout the world. This work is regularly published in top tier academic journals in management and in psychology. This means we know the cutting edge science and practices in the field and draw on it to inform all of our services and products. This is critical because so much of what’s offered in the leadership development space is not informed by science and has little predictive ability. Our products and services are based on research that demonstrate real impact. In other words, thanks to our research, and the leading academic research in the field, we’re actualizing our mission to develop future leaders.
Refinu provides bespoke development tools, personality profiling and corporate consulting at scale. We are scientists who draw on evidence-based research to develop our assessments, selection procedures and development tools. We draw from established research on Volitional Personality Change — a person’s inherent desire to change aspects of their personality. People can, and actually do, change their personality over their life. Refinu personality assessments help leaders drive this change with customized strategies for improvement.

Micah Berek
Managing Director (he/him)
As founder and managing director, Micah blends business strategy and communications expertise with decades of consulting work in emerging media, SaaS, and e-commerce sectors. Realizing the need for authentic and scientifically validated psychometric testing, he worked to design an intuitive and easy to use tool that was not just trusted due to its scientific accuracy, but robust enough to be used as a scalable enterprise solution. Micah is also a classically trained musician and composes music for commercials and documentary film.
Dr. Margaret Ormiston
Academic Advisor (she/her)
Margaret is an associate professor of Management in the School of Business at George Washington University. She is a leading expert on leadership and effective team performance. She received her doctorate in Business Administration and Industrial Relations from University of California, Berkeley. Margaret’s award winning research is published in top journals in the fields of Management and Psychology, including Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Psychological Science, Personnel Psychology, and Leadership Quarterly, and presented at international conferences. Her work has regularly garnered the attention of worldwide media outlets, including Harvard Business Review, The Guardian, Business Week, Fortune, National Public Radio, TED Talks, Time Magazine, and the Wall Street Journal.
Lindsay Lanning
Learning & Development Advisor (she/her)
Lindsay is the Global VP of Enablement at Salesforce and a certified executive leadership coach. Her depth of expertise allows her to understand the nuance in personality and advise Refinu with a coaching mindset to onboard, develop, unlock and maximize employee talent. Over the past 20 years, Lindsay has developed a proven track record building, leading and inspiring global teams. She has consistently been recognized and awarded for being a top manager who delivers and achieves business goals.
Angela Paulk
Strategic Development Advisor (she/her)
Angela is a seasoned change manager and financial services generalist with a background that spans research, strategy, and execution. She has led large scale transformation programs and global teams across both the public and private sectors. Angela built her career working for global investment banks Citi and Deutsche Bank, and at business intelligence start-ups acquired by BCG and Standard & Poor’s. In addition to her consulting work, she teaches Finance & Economics courses at Columbia University. Her experience provides the perfect backdrop for understanding the needs of clients looking to improve internal communication and engage their core talent.
John Brandes
Business Development Advisor (he/him)
John is an achievement-oriented problem-solver that gets energized by growing businesses with next-generation culture and technology. Selling digital solutions at Oracle, Amazon and now Replicant, John’s acumen for driving growth in the SaaS sector coupled with his AI and UX/CX expertise makes him a solid resource for our FinTech and HealthTech products.
Aisling Carlson
Strategic Development Advisor (she/her)
Aisling’s work with early stage startups and VCs helped develop her unique focus on growth and human capital. Cutting her teeth in leadership development/DEI at Heidrick & Struggles, Aisling honed her innovation strategies at Anthemis, Flo Technologies and Diversity VC where she currently serves as a senior advisor. Aisling’s business development experience has been instrumental in helping Refinu to forge partnerships and develop an efficient GTM plan.
